PT signs document from the São Paulo Forum that recognizes Maduro’s victory in Venezuela

The Workers’ Party (PT) signed a document from the São Paulo Forum that recognizes the dictator’s victory Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela’s presidential elections, held in July this year. The information was released by CNN Brazil.
Held amidst several accusations of fraud, the election ended with the dictator declared the winner by the country’s National Electoral Council (CNE), which he controls: Maduro would have had 51% of the votes, while his opponent, Edmundo González, would have had 44%. .
Documents collected by the opposition and presented by the NGO Centro Carter attested to González’s victory, but the regime still refuses to present its results of the investigation.
The resolution of the Forum — an organization created in the early 1990s that brings together left-wing parties from several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean — was the result of a meeting of the group in Mexico on September 29, two days before the inauguration ceremony of the new president of the country, Cláudia Sheinbaum, to whom the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was present.

Over the course of seven pages, the group criticizes right-wing governments in Latin America, such as that of Luis Lacalle Pou, in Uruguay; that of Javier Milei, in Argentina; and that of Daniel Noboa, in Ecuador.
Furthermore, it condemns what it calls Israel’s “ethnic cleansing” in Palestine and its attacks on Lebanon, a “growing military presence” of the United States in the region and the advance of the far right in Europe.
The Forum’s resolution also states that “political forces for democracy remain urgent in our countries, with the growing threat of right-wing extremism, neo-fascism and imperialism”, and that “the unity of democratic, progressive and revolutionary forces is fundamental, as well as how to raise the flag of peace, sovereign integration and social justice in our region”.
Regarding Brazil, the document accuses the right, despite its defeat in the 2022 presidential election, of hindering the advances of the PT government — which, according to the Forum, has managed to take the country off the hunger map, promoting economic growth and distribution of income.
THE CNNthe secretary of international relations of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and representative of the party at the São Paulo Forum, Ana Prestes, stated that the Brazilian government’s position on Venezuela is “confusing and needs to be clearer”. “There is no evidence that Maduro lost the election,” he claimed.
PT wings, however, criticize the inclusion of the party’s signature in the document. Also to CNNfederal deputy Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG) stated that the party’s stance is “disconnected from what Lula and the majority of supporters think” and that “Maduro’s position creates an embarrassment for Latin America”.
