STF files charges against trio who harassed Moraes at airport

Minister Dias Toffoli, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), decided this Monday (2) to extinguish the punishment of the trio accused of harassing minister Alexandre de Moraes at Rome airport, in Italy, in 2023. With the decision, the case will be dismissed and the accused will not be convicted.

Toffoli’s decision was taken after the defendants’ lawyers filed a retraction request with the Supreme Court.

In July this year, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) reported to the STF the couple Roberto Mantovani Filho and Andrea Mantovani and their son-in-law, Alex Zanatta, for crimes of insult and slander.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the accused offended Moraes with insults such as “thug”, “bought”, “communist” and “thief” and “election fraudster”. The offenses occurred when the minister, his wife and three children were in the airport departure lounge.

After analyzing the request, Toffoli recognized that criminal legislation allows retraction in cases of crimes against honor.

“Considering the unique context involving the facts narrated in the complaint and the confession of the crimes committed by the accused (retraction), I declare their punishments extinct”, Toffoli decided.
