Trial on Google monopoly will not be postponed due to the arrival of Trump’s team, says judge
“If there is a reassessment of the medicines being requested, it needs to be done quickly,” the judge said at a hearing.
The DOJ sued Google in 2020, during Trump’s first term. Mehta ruled in August that Google has an illegal monopoly on online search and related advertising.
The DOJ under President Joe Biden has proposed not only making Google sell the world’s most widely used web browser, but also sharing data and search results with competitors. The broad proposal also seeks to ban Google from buying or investing in search rivals, query-based artificial intelligence products or advertising technology.
Google called the proposals “shocking” and said they would harm North American competitiveness.
How artificial intelligence affects the online search landscape is expected to be a key topic in the trial. Prosecutors said they plan to call witnesses from OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence startup Perplexity, Microsoft and Meta Platforms.
