President Donald Trump announced on Monday (7) the beginning of “direct” and “almost the highest” negotiations with Iran about the nuclear program of that country, with a first meeting next Saturday in Oman.

In 2015, Tehran concluded an agreement with the permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, Russia, the United States, France and the United Kingdom), as well as Germany, to supervise its nuclear activities. The text provided for a flexibility of sanctions, in exchange for the supervision of Iranian nuclear activities.

In 2018, during his first term, Trump removed the United States from the pact and resumed sanctions. In retaliation, Iran accelerated its nuclear program.
