Trump asks Netanyahu for pardon in corruption cases
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, asked the Israeli Parliament today for a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, prosecuted in three separate cases for corruption.
In one of them, the prime minister and his wife are accused of accepting more than 260 thousand dollars (R$ 1.4 million, at current prices) in luxury items such as cigars, jewelry and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favors.
“Cigars and champagne, who cares about that?” Trump joked to lawmakers. “I have an idea, Mr. President,” he told his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog. “Why don’t you grant him a pardon?” he added.
