Trump says he will announce new commercial barriers: ‘reciprocity’

In the Brazilian case, the argument of the government and the private sector is that the relationship is already favorable to Americans and that Trump’s justification would make little sense.
This is because US goods are entering Brazil at rates lower than what is charged by the country of the rest of international partners. An analysis of commercial flow between the two countries from official data reveals that if Brazil’s average rate to the world is 11%, it is less than 5% for the US.
48.1% of imports of US goods entering the country did not pay any fee, more than $ 15 billion. Products such as steel coal or oil are part of this list of exempt products.
Fees of 0% to 2% are also charged in cases related to engines and parts of products that, once assembled in Brazil, are exported again. Of the ten best -selling US products to the domestic market, eight of them have fees of less than 3%.
In another survey by the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), the realization is that the US has a positive balance in trade with Brazil. In a decade, the favorable balance in the trade balance to Americans totaled $ 100.6 billion. In 2023, the Brazilian deficit was US $ 5.3 billion.
By 2024, Brazilian exports to the US reached a record volume of US $ 40.3 billion in 2024. But Brazilian imports from the US totaled US $ 40.6 billion, an increase of 6.9% over 2023.
