Trump seals Gaza peace deal during summit in Egypt
After the summit, Trump confirmed the end of the war. “After years of bloodshed and suffering, the war in Gaza has come to an end. Humanitarian aid and hundreds of trucks of food, medical equipment and resources paid for by the people in this room are being sent. Civilians are returning home, hostages are returning home.”
During the speech, Trump also said he will support the reconstruction of the region. “We all agree that support for Gaza must be done to support the people, but we do not want to finance anything related to hatred, terror or bloodshed, as has happened in the past. We also agree that the reconstruction of Gaza requires that it be demilitarized and that a new Civil Police must create the conditions of security for the people in Gaza. I intend to be a partner in ensuring a better future.”
Hamas today released the 20 hostages held in Gaza since the Hamas attack in October 2023. They are between 21 and 48 years old and were handed over to Israeli troops. Four bodies of hostages were also released by the terrorist group.
Almost two thousand Israeli prisoners have been released and are now in Gaza. A representative of the Palestinian authority close to the negotiations said that the group is still fighting for the release of seven high-ranking prisoners. Among them are Marwan Barghouti, leader of Fatah, and Ahmad Saadat, of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Israel and Hamas must now negotiate the implementation of the next steps of the US 20-point plan. The plan calls for the Palestinian group to disarm and relinquish control of Gaza after the end of the conflict. Islamic representatives say they will not govern the territory after the war. “It’s a closed matter,” a source from the Islamist movement close to the negotiations told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
