who can take it and when
There is no age restriction for pregnant women. The ministry’s recommendation is that a single dose be taken for each new pregnancy. As disclosed by the ministry, the effectiveness of the single-dose immunization strategy from the 28th pregnancy was proven in clinical studies that demonstrated an effectiveness of 81.8% in preventing serious respiratory diseases caused by RSV in babies during the first three months of life.
In the private network, the RSV vaccine has been available since 2024, but the application can cost more than R$1,500. The offer by the SUS, according to the ministry, was made possible through an agreement between the Butantan Institute and Pfizer, which transferred the production technology for the immunizer to the Brazilian laboratory. The federal government’s investment for the acquisition of vaccines was R$1.17 billion, according to the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha.
The Ministry of Health carried out a major technology transfer from an international company to guarantee the supply of this vaccine, which will be fully nationalized in the SUS through the Butantan Institute. The vaccination campaign starts in December. All pregnant women, from the 28th week onwards, will be called to receive the vaccine, guaranteeing protection for the baby during pregnancy.
