With the promise of amnesty, Caiado is announced as a PSD pre-candidate for Planalto

The PSD officially announced, this Monday (30), the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado, as the party’s pre-candidate for President. The announcement took place in the afternoon, during an event at the acronym’s headquarters in São Paulo.

Caiado’s choice comes after the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Júnior, withdrew from running for the election and amid protests from the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, who had declared his interest in being the party’s candidate.

“The PSD has completed this important stage of defining our pre-candidacy and also candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, soon. A difficult choice and a privilege, because it is a privilege for the party to have the opportunity to define a choice having three excellent candidates, three governors who are very well evaluated in their states”, stated the party president, Gilberto Kassab, during a press conference.

“A difficult choice and a privilege, because it is a privilege for the party to have the opportunity to define a choice by having three excellent candidates, three highly rated governors in their states”, stated the party president, Gilberto Kassab.

Earlier, Leite stated that he was “disenchanted” with the decision and criticized what he called the maintenance of the logic of polarization in national politics.

In a video published on social media, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul avoided directly confronting the choice of the acronym, but signaled discomfort with the direction adopted. “This decision disappoints me, like many other Brazilians,” he said, adding that he does not intend to dispute the party’s internal position.

What to expect from Caiado?

During the pre-candidacy launch event, Ronaldo Caiado stated that his first act, if elected, will be to grant amnesty to former president Jair Bolsonaro, currently imprisoned at home.

“My first act will be exactly broad, general and unrestricted amnesty. Polarization is not a feature of national politics and can be erased by someone who is not part of it”, he stated. “I came with this objective, to really pacify Brazil, to amnesty everyone, including the former president. I will be showing that, from then on, I will take care of people.”

During his speech, the governor of Goiás also threw hints at current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who, alongside Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), is one of the main opponents in the dispute.

“I can also say that I am passionate and very dedicated to raising my dogs, which lately the president has been trying to blame for the high interest rate,” he said.

On Thursday (26), Lula commented on the increase in care and spending on dogs in Brazil, in front of Chinese authorities, during an event to reopen the manufacturing park of the vehicle manufacturer Caoa, in Anápolis (GO).

On the occasion, Lula commented to Zhu Huarong, a representative of a Chinese car manufacturer present, that the Chinese should not have “this problem”.

The talk about animals took place while Lula commented on the increase in consumption by Brazilian families, in a scenario of loss of purchasing power and greater debt.

Currently, the government is mobilizing studies to try to change the interest rate on credit cards, one of the attempts to curb family debt in the country in an election year.
