“Worried” and “frustrated” are some of the adjectives that the mother of five uses when they ask you how you feel.

The immigrant, who left Mexico due to violence carrying her eldest daughter in her arms, was briefly arrested in 2019, during the first Trump administration, in a crash against the supermarket where she worked, for irregular practices.

But Hernández, who now works in a restaurant and has four children born in the US, says he has never been so afraid as in the last three months.

“You go to work, but you don’t know what will happen (…) you don’t know whether it’s going home or not,” he says to AFP. “They don’t care, even if you don’t have a criminal record,” he added.

Hernández limited his exits to the strictly necessary and increased the precautions. When you go to work, or take your children to school, check it out for suspicious cars first. And be aware of messages from friends, neighbors and non -governmental organizations.
