Creation of a Parliamentary Front to “prevent” woke ideology from advancing in the SP Chamber

A project to create an Antiwoke Parliamentary Front was approved on Wednesday (25) by the Constitution and Justice Committee of the São Paulo City Council. Authored by councilors Lucas Pavanato (PL), Sonaira Fernandes (PL), Adrilles Jorges (União) and Rubinho Nunes (União), the proposal seeks to contain the advancement of “certain ideological agendas, associated with the movement known as woke”.

“The Parliamentary Front seeks to prevent the advances of this harmful ideology, preserving the right to freedom of expression. The non-partisan nature of the Antiwoke Parliamentary Front guarantees its broad representation and allows for the best development of balanced and respectful proposals for the plurality of São Paulo society,” said Pavanato in justification.

The councilor also stated that “for a long time, people have been bringing foreign ideologies, including those that try to distort the role of women and other issues” and that the parliamentary front could “bring the discussion into the House”, offering a counterpoint.

the term woke is an English slang popularly used to refer to issues debated by the progressive wing of voters, in the United States represented mainly by Democrats. In Brazil, the term is close to what conservatives call “identity issues”, which address race, sexuality and gender.

The proposal received 6 votes in favor and 3 against in the house. Councilors Silvia Ferraro (PSOL), Thammy Miranda (PSD) and Luna Zarattini (PT-SP) voted against.

According to the proposal, the front will seek to promote Christian values, monitor initiatives considered “aligned with the movement” and propose legislative actions in the municipality. If created, membership will be open to all councilors and meetings will be public.
