Lula says he is not offended by Flávio calling him Opala: ‘his father is in the scrapyard’
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) mocked former president Jair Bolsonaro this Thursday, 26th. Lula used a criticism made by senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) against him, when he stated that the PT member was an Opala, to say that Jair Bolsonaro “is on the chopping block”.
Lula did not explicitly mention the former president’s health status, but the statement was a reference to the fact that Bolsonaro was arrested and currently in the hospital. The former chief executive is expected to be discharged from hospital this Friday, the 27th.

“The other day, Bolsonaro’s son said: ‘Lula is an old Opala’. When he says that, I don’t take offense. I had a turbocharged Opala 94. If he knew about it, he wouldn’t say it. He says it because his father’s Opala is his father, who is in the dismantling shop. He doesn’t know what a turbocharged Opala is,” he said, during a federative caravan event in Rio de Janeiro.
On February 2nd, in a radio interview Fan FMFlávio compared Lula to an “old Chevrolet Opala”. “At some point, the Opala was once beautiful, it was once a luxury car, that gave results and took you anywhere. Today, Lula is a retrograde, backward and outdated person”, stated the senator.
Then, on the 11th of the same month, at an event promoted by BTG Pactual, the senator once again linked Lula with the car model, citing alcohol consumption. Flávio said that the president was an “expired product”. “If you compare Lula to a car, it’s that old Opala, manual transmission, it used to be beautiful, but today it won’t take you anywhere and it still drinks a lot,” he said.
In this Thursday’s speech, Lula, 80 years old, spoke about his health and his willingness to exercise. Constantly, the president’s team and first lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, publish videos of him exercising.
“These days I was doing gymnastics, Janja filmed it and an idiot (said): ‘he can’t do that, because I’m 45 and I can’t do it, he’s 80’. Train, you d*ck. Train, prepare, drink less and work to see how it’s done”, he stated.
Lula also criticized the Bolsonaro family over the management of federal hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. He said that the former president and his family did not take care of the hospitals “with the slightest respect.” “The federal hospitals in Rio de Janeiro were in the hands of the Bolsonaro family, who did not take care of this hospital with the slightest respect,” he stated.
The president also criticized the former governor of Rio de Janeiro Cláudio Castro (PL), for operations in favelas in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Without saying Castro’s name, the PT member said that “it is very easy for the governor to come to the favela, kill the poor and say that he is fighting organized crime”. “I want to see when they will catch the crime bosses, who live in the penthouse in Copacabana,” he said.
