Tereza Cristina says she is prepared to be vice-president on Flávio Bolsonaro’s ticket

Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) stated that she feels “prepared” to serve as vice president on the ticket of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) in the 2026 elections. The statement was made in an interview with Look published this Friday, 27.

Tereza Cristina said that she feels “honored” to be considered to run in the elections on Flávio’s ticket, but that the decision is not up to her. In February of this year, she had mentioned that she considered that it was still “too early” for the party to name her as vice president.

“I feel honored by this. But I can also be a candidate for president as a woman, why not? I feel prepared. But that doesn’t depend on my will. Being vice-president is not my ultimate dream. Everyone says ‘ah, if you had been vice-president in 2022, Bolsonaro would have won the election’, but they never talked to me about this possibility”, said Tereza Cristina.

The national president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, defended that Flávio’s eventual presidential ticket should have a woman as vice candidate and cited Tereza Cristina as his preferred name for the vacancy. The senator had already been mentioned by him in 2022, when Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ran for re-election.

The senator stated that, even though she is used to working in traditionally male environments, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, she still feels that there is discrimination within Congress.

“Politics is the most sexist world I’ve ever lived in. Sometimes, you speak and the man doesn’t let you speak. So, you have to say: ‘It’s my turn to speak, I’ve already heard you, you’re going to have to listen to me’. Our culture is sexist, but women will turn things around and, soon, we’ll see many women here in Congress”, she said.

Tereza Cristina also mentioned that she believes that Flávio Bolsonaro is the candidate most likely to face President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the election.

“I have always said that the best candidate would be the one with the effective conditions to beat President Lula and who also had the ability to unite the right, even if it was in the second round. At this moment, Flávio Bolsonaro’s candidacy is the one that is, without a doubt, the most competitive”, he stated.

Tereza Cristina is seen as a name with potential for dialogue with agribusiness leaders. In February this year, she assumed the presidency of the Superior Agribusiness Council of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), at the invitation of the entity’s president, Paulo Skaf.
