PL pulls the line of mayors in large cities and can still triple the mark in the 2nd round

Elections 2024: who leads the dispute for mayors in the 26 capitals

In the 103 largest cities in the country − the famous “G-103” (group of municipalities in which there is the possibility of a second round) −, the Liberal Party (PL) was the party that elected the most representatives in the first round.

Former president Jair Bolsonaro’s party managed to secure 10 mayors in the 50 cities with more than 200,000 voters who have already defined the ticket that will command the local Executive Branch for the next 4 years.

That’s 3 more than União Brasil and Progressistas, parties that occupy second position, 4 more than Gilberto Kassab’s PSD (one of the highlights of the 2024 municipal elections), and no less than double the number achieved by MDB.

Just as a comparison, the Workers’ Party (PT), the acronym of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has only re-elected 2 mayors in these large cities so far: Marília, in Contagem (MG), and Margarida Salomão, in Juiz de Fora (MG). ).

Despite this Sunday’s achievement (6), the PL can grow even further and open up a greater advantage over its opponents in the largest Brazilian cities. This is because the party has candidates in second round contests in 23 other locations.

In 12 of them, the party takes the lead in the dispute − including the capitals Aracaju (SE), with Emília Correa (PL); Belo Horizonte, with Bruno Engler; Goiânia (GO), with Fred Rodrigues; Fortaleza (CE), André Fernandes; and Palmas (TO), with Janad Valcari. Which makes PL also the acronym with the greatest chance of success in large cities in the second round.

Next come PT, with 13 representatives; União Brasil, with 11; and PSD and MDB, each with 10 candidates with the possibility of winning in the race to the polls on October 27th.

See the partisan panorama in the big cities, according to the results of the first round of municipal elections this Sunday:

Party Elected in the first round Candidates contested second round
Forward 1 1
Citizenship 0 1
MDB 5 10
New 1 2
PDT 0 3
PL 10 23
PMB 0 1
Can we 3 6
PP 7 6
PSB 2 2
PSD 6 10
PSDB 2 5
PSOL 0 2
PT 2 13
Republicans 4 7
Solidarity 0 1
Union Brazil 7 11
TOTAL* 50 104 (2 candidates per municipality)
* The list disregards the result of the election in Vitória da Conquista (BA), where candidate Sheila Lemos (União Brasil) obtained 58.83% of the valid votes, but had the vote annulled under legal circumstances. Therefore, the total number of municipalities is 102 (50 with victories in the first round and 52 with disputes in the second round).

Considering the maximum number of mayors in large municipalities that each party can win in the second round, the PL has a chance of reaching the impressive mark of 33. The number easily surpasses strong opponents in the dispute over the general table of cities, such as União Brasil (which can reach 18), PSD (16), MDB (15) and PT (15).
