Haddad: more than 2 thousand irregular betting sites will go offline on Friday (11)

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT)stated, this Thursday (10), that around 2,040 irregular online betting sites, which did not obtain authorization from the federal government to operate in Brazil, will go offline on Friday (11).

The minister’s statements were made during a press conference, at the door of the Ministry of Finance, in Brasília (DF). Haddad said that he has already sent the list with the names of the “bets” that will be blocked to the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).

“The telephone companies are, following a referral from Anatel, preventing access in the national territory”, explained Haddad. “Those who are not regular, nor in the process of regularization, will go off the air tomorrow (Friday).”

“We are not under any pressure on this issue because there are some criteria that the president wants the measure to meet. It has to be a neutral reform from a revenue point of view”, he explained.

The Minister of Finance reiterated the recommendation he had already made for people to redeem their money on these betting sites that will have their operations suspended in the country. The deadline for this to happen ends at 11:59 pm this Thursday.

The document was prepared following a request from the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), within the scope of an action being processed at the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that requests the suspension of the betting law

“We are asking people to rescue because it becomes more complex to find a way to rescue from tomorrow. So, the ideal is for people to take action”, asked Haddad.

“Many of these sites are not in national territory, they do not have an address in Brazil. The person goes online, they could be placing a bet in a tax haven. In fact, the person may even be placing a bet at what they think is a betting house, and it is not. It’s just a fraud. So, that’s why measures are being taken, because people are being led astray,” he added.

“It may happen that the person will still be able to access one of these sites from tomorrow, because there is a small company there that will take a day or two to respond to Anatel, but tomorrow (Friday) the law effectively begins to come into effect as approved by the National Congress.”
