Blackout, ghosts of the past and alliances are highlights of the debate between Nunes and Boulos

The debate promoted by Estadão and TV Record with the candidates for mayor of São Paulo ended at around 11:09 pm last Saturday, 19th. Candidates Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) faced each other during three blocks, through direct confrontations and questions from journalists.

Among the main topics discussed in the debate were the responsibility for the blackout and the Enel concession, the psolist’s past in relation to his role as leader of the Homeless Workers Movement and questions about the candidates’ alliances, such as the support of the former -President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to the current mayor.

The PSOL candidate criticized the mayor for the lack of pruning and management of trees and Nunes held the federal government and the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) responsible for not breaking the contract with Enel. Both defended the end of the contract with the dealership.

The mayor explored his opponent’s and PSOL’s positions on public safety, drugs and abortion. Boulos defended himself by adopting more moderate positions than he has expressed in the past, as has been the tone of the campaign.

According to the most recent Datafolha survey, released last Thursday, 17th, Nunes has 51% of the votes and Boulos, 33%.

The second round is scheduled for October 27th.

In his final considerations in the Record and Estadão debate, Boulos asked for the vote of voters who did not choose him in the first round and voted for Tabata Amaral (PSB), José Luiz Datena (PSDB) and Pablo Marçal (PRTB). “Bet on change. I prepared myself. You can trust,” he said.

And the PSOL candidate said: “Don’t let yourselves be frightened by lies, fake news, attacks, which will come even stronger in this final stretch.”

To then conclude: “I brought Marta Suplicy to be my deputy, who was a great mayor, I brought together a team of experts, I looked for international solutions and I brought life experience living with people.”

In the final moments of the debate, Nunes said that he was in Praça da Sé, in the central region of São Paulo, and that he had observed children playing during the night. The candidate’s speech came after a question from Estadão journalist and columnist, Marcelo Godoy, about security in the region and appropriate measures to protect the population.

In a debate between Record and Estadão, Boulos said that the police need to treat everyone equally, with no difference between those who live in the poorest and richest places.

“I was at Praça da Sé the other day, it was around 10pm, the children were playing… We know there is a lot of work ahead, but we are and will continue to make progress”, replied Nunes.

The speech generated irony from Boulos, saying that the city painted by Ricardo Nunes was very different from the one in real life, and stating that he always avoided answers.

“Guys, did you see that he doesn’t even turn red? Children playing at 11pm in Praça da Sé, the population smiling with their cell phones in hand. Look at the fantasy fiction he puts together”, said Boulos in his comment to the response.

Nunes also said again that she would open her banking secrecy if any authority asked. “Opening my account, if requested by any authority, is permitted. I have a clean and transparent life,” said Nunes.
