As U.S. elections approach, officials, diplomats and other sources in the region say Israel is seeking, through military operations, to secure its borders and ensure that its rivals cannot regroup.

Israel is also preparing to retaliate for an Iranian missile strike this month, although Washington has pressed for Iranian energy or nuclear facilities not to be attacked.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was the target of an assassination attempt by “Iran’s proxy Hezbollah” on Saturday when a drone was directed at his vacation home. In a call with former US President Donald Trump, the prime minister reiterated that Israel will make decisions based on its own interests, according to a statement from Netanyahu’s office.

The Israeli government has rejected several attempts by the United States, its main ally and military supporter, to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon.

WITHDRAWAL ORDERS

In Gaza, the Health Ministry said rescue operations following the attack in Beit Lahiya were being hampered by communications problems and ongoing Israeli military operations.
