Attorney General of the Republic must take action in the STF against betting law

The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, must file a Direct Unconstitutional Action (Adin) with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against the law that regulated betting companies, the so-called “bets”. The information is from the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

The focus of the demand would be to invalidate the current text so that there could be greater discussion in the National Congress to approve legislation that is tougher on the activity.

In Gonet’s understanding, the law would not provide sufficient guarantees regarding fundamental rights such as health and could be harmful to the country’s economy. The potential offense to the economy would come from encouraging “irresponsible spending”.

The law would also be deficient in fraud control mechanisms and would threaten activities such as football, since the main companies in the sector currently sponsor the biggest clubs in the country.
