Americans go to the polls to decide who lives and dies in the world

More generally, diplomats also fear the suspension of American resources for dozens of other programs, including those to combat climate change. After Trump cut payments to the WHO (World Health Organization) and other agencies, Joe Biden’s government resumed the flow of resources. Thus, US contributions to the UN system increased from US$11.6 billion in 2020 to US$18.1 billion in 2022.

Documents from the most radical wing of American conservatives point out that the proposal is to condition aid on a change of alliances on the part of those receiving the ransom. In other words: to survive, they will have to align themselves with US interests.

Brazil is also waiting to make decisions. The Chinese government insists on launching negotiations for the country to be part of its global investment project, the new Silk Road. At Palácio do Planalto, however, the order is to wait for the polls in the USA to know what fate to give to relations with the rest of the world.

The fate of the war in Ukraine, humanitarian aid in Sudan, violence in Haiti and dozens of crises around the world also depend on the Americans.

In Cuba, for example, the blackout that the island is facing is, in part, the responsibility of sanctions imposed by the USA. But removing the embargo is not just a foreign policy issue. The vote of anti-Castro Cubans in Florida is fundamental and, therefore, leaving the island in the dark is just a “collateral impact” of the democratic struggle for power in Washington.

Not everyone chooses to wait. In Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, fearful of a possible Kamala Harris government, believes that the window of opportunity is closing and that continuing the massacre of Palestinians may be more difficult with the campaign over. Therefore, he has not hesitated to expand military operations, while knowing that his greatest ally is at an internal crossroads.
