Climate change: Trump “has to think like an inhabitant of planet Earth”, says Lula

Two days after the Republican’s victory donald trump in the United States elections, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that the American leader, whose new government will begin in January 2025, must commit to measures to combat climate change and preserve the environment.

Lula’s statements were made during an interview given by the Brazilian president to journalist Christiane Amanpour, from CNN American.

In his first term, Trump had a government marked by denial regarding climate change and the lack of US participation in global initiatives in favor of sustainability.

“We all have to take responsibility for maintaining planet Earth. We need to ensure that the planet does not suffer from warming greater than 1.6 degrees. We need to ensure that rivers remain healthy, with clean water. And we need to ensure that the biomes of all countries are preserved”, said Lula.

Partnership between Brazil and the USA “has everything to grow” with Trump’s victory, says Alckmin

“The biggest trading partner is China. Now, the United States is the largest buyer of manufacturing and the largest investor in Brazil. The relationships are of the State, they are not personal”, said the vice president

The President of the Republic highlighted the political, economic and military strength of the USA, which gives the country great responsibility before other nations in the world.

“I believe that President Trump has to think like an inhabitant of planet Earth. And as the commander of the most important and richest country in the world, which has the greatest technology and is best prepared from a military point of view”, added Lula.

Donald Trump, who governed the USA between 2017 and 2021, was elected for a new term after defeating the current vice president, Kamala Harrisfrom the Democratic Party, in last Tuesday’s elections (5).

The former president finished ahead of his opponent in both the Electoral College and the popular vote. In his government, from 2025 onwards, he will have a Republican Party majority in the Senate and, probably, also in the Chamber.

According to the latest updates, Trump had obtained 295 delegates in the Electoral College – 270 were needed. Kamala Harris, in turn, had 226.

Lula greeted Trump

After confirming Trump’s victory, Lula took to social media last Wednesday (6) and congratulated the president-elect on his results at the polls.

In a message published on his official X account (formerly Twitter)Lula stated that democracy “must be respected” and wished the republican luck.

“My congratulations to President Donald Trump on his electoral victory and return to the presidency of the United States. Democracy is the voice of the people and it must always be respected”, wrote Lula.

“The world needs dialogue and joint work to have more peace, development and prosperity. I wish the new government luck and success”, added the Brazilian president.

Support for Kamala

Last week, on the eve of the election in the United States, in an interview with the French TV channel TF1Lula had made clear his support for Kamala’s candidacy.

At the time, the president stated: “With Kamala winning the elections, it is much safer for us to strengthen democracy in the USA. We saw what President Trump was like at the end of his term, carrying out that attack on the Capitol, something that was unthinkable to happen in the USA, because the USA presented itself to the world as a model of democracy. This model has collapsed.”
