Under Trump, hundreds of cases of Capitol invaders must be dismissed

The case against Trump for trying to stage a coup by not accepting the results of the 2020 election is at risk of being abandoned. On Friday, special counsel Jack Smith asked the court to pause the proceedings and suspend filing deadlines in the case accusing the president-elect of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.

Smith, in Trump’s crosshairs, indicated that the government needs time to “evaluate this unprecedented circumstance” (of the defendant winning the election) and determine the appropriate course for the future. Justice Department tradition prohibits the prosecution of sitting presidents.

In October, Trump promised to fire Smith “in two seconds.” “It will be one of the first things to be dealt with,” said the then-candidate.

Even so, the Department of Justice indicated that it has two more months before the inauguration to work on the cases and indicated that, in three years, these were the conclusions:

164 defendants were charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to a police officer;

As proven in Court, weapons used and carried on Capitol grounds include firearms; spray; tasers; edged weapons, including a sword, axes, and knives; and improvised weapons such as destroyed office furniture, fences, bicycle racks, stolen riot shields, baseball bats, hockey sticks, flag poles, PVC piping, and reinforced gloves;
