Fux defends immediate adjustment to the rules of the online betting market
Minister Luiz Fux, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), stated, this Monday (11), that an “immediate adjustment” is needed in the rules for the online betting market (bets) in Brazil.
Fux chaired a public hearing to hear experts’ arguments about the effects of the proliferation of betting on the economy and the mental health of bettors.
Without saying whether he will issue an injunction (provisional decision) on the issue, the minister said he will assess the urgency of the case.
“It was very clear that it needed a very immediate adjustment. I will talk to the powers that be and also analyze all the information. We will assess whether before the judgment on the merits, which should take place in the first half of 2025, there is a need for the so-called emergency measure”, defended Fux.
Supreme Court promotes public hearing on online betting market
The hearing was called by Minister Luiz Fux, rapporteur of the process on the issue. Based on the information collected at the hearing, Fux will prepare the vote and release the case for judgment
The process that motivates the debate was filed with the Court by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC).
The entity questions Law 14,790/2023, a rule that regulated fixed-odd online betting. In the direct action of unconstitutionality (ADI), the CNC says that the legislation, by promoting the practice of gambling, causes negative impacts on less favored social classes. Furthermore, the entity cites the growth in household debt.
According to a survey released in September this year by the Central Bank (BC), Bolsa Família beneficiaries spent R$3 billion on bets in August alone.
