In a quick vote, São Paulo councilors adjust their own salaries by 37%

In a single and symbolic vote, in which there was no nominal vote, but 7 votes against and one abstention, the São Paulo City Council approved, on Tuesday (12), a 37% increase in the salaries of municipal parliamentarians. The “flash vote” was done in just 23 seconds.

With the increase, councilors’ salaries will go from the current R$18,991.68 to R$24,754.79 from the next legislature, starting in February 2025.

The City Council’s press office released a statement about the salary increase. “The last adjustment approved in plenary by São Paulo councilors took place in December 2016. Since then there has been no salary correction. The adjustment approved this Tuesday (12) was well below the accumulated inflation from January 2017 to October 2024, which is 47.34%. Furthermore, it respects the ceiling provided for in the Constitution, which is 75% of the allowance for state deputies”, says the text.

No sanction

The salary increase project does not depend on the sanction of the re-elected mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB). The initiative came from the Board of Directors of the Chamber, chaired by the councilor Milton Leite (União Brasil)having received favorable opinions from the Constitution and Justice, Public Administration and Finance and Budget committees.

The majority of councilors who voted against the proposal were from the PSOL bench – Celso Giannazi, Elaine do Quillombo Periférico, Luana Alvez, Professor Toninho Vespoli and Silvia from the Feminist Bench –, in addition to Fernando Holiday (PL) and Jussara Basso (PSB).
