Why more and more users abandon X for other platforms

Who is leaving X?

This Wednesday, the British newspaper The Guardian reported that it will stop posting on X, but will not delete its accounts.

The newspaper is not alone in leaving or reducing its presence on X. American media companies NPR and PBS stopped posting on the platform last year. Broadcaster Australian Broadcasting Corporation also reduced its dozens of pages on X to just four: news, sports, Chinese language and masterbrand profiles.

Most notable were the celebrity departures. American actresses Jamie Lee Curtis and Bette Midler deleted their X accounts but maintained a presence elsewhere. They joined former X users such as Elton John, Jim Carrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Gigi Hadid, who left or stopped posting after Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022.

Other public figures have vocalized their intention to leave X, but have not yet deleted their profiles. Among them are prominent names in the press and politics, such as former CNN news anchor turned YouTube streamer Don Lemon and Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

There is clearly a tendency for ideologically more left-wing profiles among the most expressive personalities to leave the platform. However, some brands are also dropping the X, and this is not limited to English-speaking brands.
