US authorizes Ukraine to use long-range weapons against Russia
The United States has authorized Ukraine to use long-range weapons such as the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to strike further into Russian territory, in response to a long-standing request from Kiev. The permission reflects an escalation in Western military support designed to weaken Moscow’s capabilities and make Russian attacks against Ukraine more difficult.
Although it is not yet clear whether there will be restrictions on the use of these missiles, there is speculation that their use may initially be limited to regions such as Kursk, where Ukraine has already regained territory. Since the start of the war, Ukrainian leaders have pressured Western allies to allow strategic strikes inside Russia, hoping to reduce Russian military efficiency and create a deterrent factor that could be used in future ceasefire negotiations.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia completes 1,000 days this Tuesday, marking one of the biggest conflicts in Europe since the Second World War. According to the United Nations, more than 6 million Ukrainians live as refugees abroad, and the country’s population has fallen by a quarter since the start of the invasion, ordered by Vladimir Putin by land, sea and air.
Military losses were catastrophic, with Western estimates putting hundreds of thousands dead or injured on both sides, although the exact numbers are kept secret.
