“I have to be grateful because I’m alive”, says Lula about the plan to kill him

The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) He publicly commented, for the first time, on the Federal Police’s (PF) revelations that there had been a plan to assassinate him at the end of last year, before he took office for his third term at Palácio do Planalto.

When participating in an event that made the Road Concession Contract Optimization Program official – the so-called “smart concessions” –, Lula spoke about the subject for the first time, in a relaxed tone.

“I’m a guy I have to be grateful for now, much more, because I’m alive. The attempt to poison me and Alckmin didn’t work and we are here”, stated the president, drawing some laughter from the audience.

Without mentioning the name of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL)investigated by the PF for his alleged participation in the attempted coup d’état, Lula defended “civility” in politics.

“When we contested the elections, I said that one of my wishes was to bring Brazil to normality, to democratic civility, in which we do things as calmly as possible”, he stated. “In a civilized way, you lose and you win”, added Lula.

“I wanted to draw attention to this historic moment we are living in. It is this country, without persecution, without the stimulus of hatred and disagreement, that we need to build”, continued Lula.

“I don’t want to poison anyone. I don’t even want to chase anyone. I just want that, when my term ends, we demoralize those who governed before us”, concluded the president.

According to PF investigations, the criminal group had the objective of preventing Lula’s inauguration and had even articulated a plan to assassinate the PT member, the vice-president. Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and the minister Alexandre de Moraesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Operation Countercoup

The investigations involving Operation Contragolpe are related to a broader investigation by the PF into the alleged activities of a criminal organization along 5 axes:

1) Virtual attacks on opponents;

2) Attacks on institutions (such as the Federal Supreme Court and the Superior Electoral Court), the electronic voting system and the health of the electoral process;

3) Attempted Coup d’état and violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law;

4) Attacks on vaccines against Covid-19 and health measures during the pandemic;

5) Use of the State structure to obtain advantages, with the use of fund supplies (corporate cards) to pay personal expenses, insertion of false vaccination data against Covid-19 in the Ministry of Health systems, and diversion of assets from high asset value handed over by foreign authorities and subsequent concealment.

The operation is related to axis 3: “Attempted Coup d’état and violent Abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law”.

According to investigators, illicit operational actions were carried out by military personnel trained in the Army’s Special Forces (FE) (the so-called “black kids”). Initially, the idea was to monitor the activities of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, for later “execution of his illegal arrest and possible murder”.

Reports indicate that such monitoring would have started shortly after the meeting, held on November 12, 2022, at the residence of Walter Braga Netto, former Minister of Defense and the Civil House in the Bolsonaro administration.

Also in the plans were the murders of Lula and Alckmin, newly elected at the time, in an attempt to prevent the new government from taking office.

According to the PF, the moves to consummate a Coup d’Etat peaked between November and December 2022 and were named “2022 World Cup” by those involved.

The evidence was identified based on the analysis of data from the cell phone seized from Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, and exchanges of messages with Marcelo Câmara, Bolsonaro’s former advisor, who joined the investigation into alleged embezzlement of jewelry received by the politician during his term in office.
