Bus falls into cliff and leaves 23 dead in Alagoas

In the Serra da Barriga region, in the municipality of União dos Palmares, in the interior of Alagoas, a bus overturned into a bank, leaving at least 23 people dead, according to G1. The accident occurred this Sunday (24) afternoon and the vehicle was heading to the Quilombo dos Palmares Memorial Park.

According to the state government, almost 30 people were injured. According to G1, witnesses said that the bus had a mechanical failure and the driver lost control of the steering. The vehicle then rolled over onto an embankment on the side of the road.

The accident site is difficult to access and the Fire Department sent three vehicles and a helicopter to rescue the victims. Children and teenagers are among the victims of the incident.

Governor Paulo Dantas (MDB) declared three days of official mourning in the state. Circumstances of the accident are still being investigated by authorities.
