Projections point to Yamandú Orsi, a pupil of Mujica, president of Uruguay

Projections from Uruguayan research institutes indicate that Yamandú Ramón Antonio Orsi Martínez, 57, is the country’s new president. The elections took place this Sunday (24), but the official result must be known by the early hours of this Monday (25), according to the Electoral Court.

What happened

Orsi would have won with percentages that could vary from 48% to 50% of the votes, according to Uruguayan research institutes. If the victory is confirmed, it will be in line with the trend of the latest electoral polls released, which showed a small advantage in voting intentions.

According to the Electoral Court, equivalent to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE), until 9:10 pm, the person with the highest number of votes was the competitor, Álvaro Delgado. Around 24% of the ballots were counted as of the last update. The Court’s minister, José Korzeniak, said, in a press conference, that it is “plausible” that the institutes’ projections are correct, but the official result will only actually be confirmed when all the ballot boxes are counted.
