‘My closest future is the cemetery’, says Mujica when voting at 89
Former guerrilla and political prisoner. Before being president between 2010 and 2015, Mujica was a guerrilla fighter in the 1960s, facing years in prison, the last between 1972 and 1985. After the military period, he held positions as federal deputy, minister of Agriculture and senator for three terms.
Technical draw marks the presidential election. Candidates Alvaro Delgado and Yamandú Orsi voted this Sunday in Montevideo, with polls indicating a technical tie. Delgado has the support of the current president, Luis Lacalle Pou, while Orsi is an ally of Mujica.
Results will be known today. The election results must be announced at 8:30 pm (Brasília time). The winner will replace Lacalle Pou in March, ending a highly rated term, as the Uruguayan Constitution prevents re-election.
