Israel attacks northern Lebanon’s border with Syria hours before ceasefire, says minister
Israeli strikes on Tuesday night targeted the border area in northern Lebanon with Syria for the first time, Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh told Reuters.
The attacks came moments after US President Joe Biden announced that a ceasefire would come into force at 4am local time on Wednesday to halt hostilities between the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and Israel.
Hamieh said it was not immediately clear whether roads had been destroyed as a result of the attacks. Israeli raids on Lebanon’s eastern outposts in recent weeks had already sealed those routes to Syria.
