South Korean president’s acronym calls for defense minister to resign
He further stated that the party is “committed to finding out all the details”. “We will do our part as a party in power to minimize economic and diplomatic damage,” he said.
Law suspended
The president of South Korea announced that he would suspend martial law after the National Assembly approved the repeal of the measure. According to the newspaper The Korea Herald, 172 opposition parliamentarians and 18 members of the government base voted in favor of the revocation.
In the statement, Yeol reinforced the request that the opposition not proceed with the impeachment requests. “I ask the National Assembly to immediately cease the repeated attempts at impeachment, legislative manipulation and budgetary abuse that have paralyzed the functions of the State,” said the president.
Martial law is a measure adopted in war scenarios. The president used the justification of an effort to protect the country from threats posed by “communist forces” and eliminate “anti-state” elements in South Korean territory.
The measure changes the operating rules of a country, leaving aside civil laws and putting military laws into force. The main consequences of martial law are the suspension of part or all of the fundamental freedoms of citizens living in the affected area.
