The prime minister of Bashar al-Assad’s government agreed to transfer power to the rebel-led Salvation Government following the seizure of Damascus and Assad’s flight to Russia.

What happened

The transfer of power marks the end of 13 years of civil war in Syria. The Assad family’s rule, which lasted more than 50 years, comes to an end, bringing hope and uncertainty to Syrians and refugees.

Oil prices rose more than 1% due to instability in the country. Analysts point out that the situation could increase regional instability, despite Syria not being a major oil producer.
