Left threatens to overthrow European leader who signed agreement with Mercosur

For the motion of censure to be tabled, it needs the support of 72 MEPs, 10% of the European Parliament, and requires a two-thirds majority to pass. An approval leads to the resignation of the Commission.

The left-wing bloc, however, has only 44 deputies and needs to convince other groups to join the project.

Manon Aubry, president of the left-wing group in the European Parliament and vice-president of the International Trade Committee, said that Von der Leyen “decided to impose this socially unfair and environmentally criminal agreement on the European people against their will and with little regard for the European Parliament “.

“We will not stand by while this Commission weakens our democracies, harms our farmers and food sovereignty, trades the future of our planet for profit and risk,” he said. “We ask our colleagues in the European Parliament to join our motion of no confidence and put an end to this farce,” he said.

MEP Martin Schirdewan, also from the left-wing bloc, accused the Commission of “disregarding national parliamentary votes, ignoring concerns raised in the European Parliament and ignoring criticism from trade unions, environmental groups and farmers”.

“Our motion of censure is a vital first step in holding the Commission accountable.”
