‘Wanted’ posters featuring health plan CEOs seen in New York
Suspect of the crime was arrested on Monday (9). Luigi Nicholas Mangione was in the region of Altoona, Pennsylvania, 375 kilometers away from New York, at a McDonald’s restaurant. Although he was reported due to his similarity to the photos released by the New York police, the suspect was arrested for presenting a false New Jersey document and for illegal possession of a weapon.
Mangione had a “ghost gun” and a silencer. These are weapons without a series and more difficult to trace, most of the time made at home from individual parts. The gun found with the suspect fired 9mm ammunition — like the ones that killed Brian Thompson.
Police found Mangione’s notebook in which he wrote about his plan to kill the CEO of a company. “What do you do? You eliminate the CEO at the annual parasite accountants convention. It’s targeted, precise and doesn’t put innocent people at risk”, says one of the excerpts from the notebook. The information was published by The New York Times this Wednesday (11).
The suspect’s last known address is in Hawaii. Luigi Mangione has no criminal history in New York and is from the state of Maryland. He would have traveled to New York by bus.
Health plans in the United States
The healthcare system in the United States is based on private plans. The US is the only developed country that does not have universal health care. The service ends up being offered by companies, which often refuse coverage for surgeries, medications or even anesthesia. Published in July this year, a survey by the US National Health Center shows that 25 million Americans, including 2.8 million children, did not have full access to healthcare in 2023.
