Cyclone Chido leaves at least 14 dead in French archipelago in the Indian Ocean
The toll of 14 deaths provided by authorities is provisional, a security source told AFP.
There are people in critical condition and 246 seriously injured, said the mayor of Mamoudzou, capital of Mayotte, Ambdilwahedou Soumaila.
Extremely violent winds hit the archipelago and caused the collapse of poles, trees and roofs, in a territory where a third of the population lives in precarious homes.
There are fears of major water supply problems.
More than 15,000 homes were left without electricity, according to French authorities. Phone calls, even emergency ones, were drastically limited.
