Is the suspect of killing a CEO in the US at risk of being sentenced to death?

Officers attempted to revive Thompson and took him to a hospital, where his death was confirmed. “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare,” the company said in a statement.

Suspicion of premeditated crime. New York Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the shooter arrived on foot five minutes before Thompson, who was apparently walking without security guards in front of the hotel. His wife told NBC TV that her husband had received recent threats.

The weapon used is similar to those used by farmers to slaughter animals. The New York Police Department indicated that it is a 9mm pistol commonly used to kill animals silently. Contrary to what was thought, the killer probably did not use a silencer.

FBI offered a reward of 50 thousand dollars (R$ 300 thousand) for information on the killer’s whereabouts. After killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, he allegedly rode his bike to Central Park. Then took a taxi to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, which offers trips to New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington DC

Abandoned backpack was found in Central Park last Friday (6). Police believe the bag belonged to the person responsible for Brian Thompson’s death, but did not say what was inside it. An officer told CNN the backpack contained a jacket and money from the Monopoly game.

The healthcare system in the United States is based on private plans. The US is the only developed country that does not have universal health care. The service ends up being offered by companies, which often refuse coverage for surgeries, medications or even anesthesia. Published in July this year, a survey by the US National Health Center shows that 25 million Americans, including 2.8 million children, did not have full access to healthcare in 2023.
