Archaeologists gained access to the site during renovations to the property. The bones used would have been inserted following a specific pattern, as revealed by excavations.

The bones were all carefully cut to the same height, with some placed top-side up and others with the flat, cut sides facing up, forming a pattern.

According to archaeologists’ analysis, the floor probably dates back to the 15th century. The building in which the floor was found was built around 1609, which suggests to experts that the current building may have been built on the foundations of an older building, a common practice at the time.

Why were animal bones used on the floor?

The reason has not yet been fully deciphered by experts. According to the NL Times, archaeologists speculate that the bones may have been chosen by those responsible for building the site for some reason, such as a possible relationship with the activities carried out in the building, being part of the necessary environment for the trades practiced there.
