Russian cargo ship sinks in Mediterranean Sea after explosion
A cargo ship sank in the Mediterranean Sea this Tuesday (24) after an explosion destroyed the vessel’s engine room. According to the Reuters news agency, two of the crew are missing.
What happened
Ship Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean Sea. Built in 2009, the vessel is controlled by Oboronlogistika, a company that is part of the Russian military fleet. Reports indicate that the sinking was caused by an explosion in the engine room.
Teams search for two missing people. The Russian Foreign Ministry says 14 of the 16 crew were rescued from the vessel heading to Vladivostok, in Russia’s far east. Those rescued taken to Spain.
