Group of 12 associations asks Lula to veto “jabutis” in the PL for offshore wind farms

A group of 12 associations and entities in the electricity sector released this Thursday (2), an open letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula Silva asking for a veto of the “jabutis” amendments to the bill that establishes a regulatory framework for the generation of offshore wind energy. The signatories ask for the prohibition of articles 19, 22 and 23, included in the text of the PL.

The legal framework is defended by the government, which must veto only amendments unrelated to the central theme – which include the contracting of natural gas thermal plants and mineral coal plants. If the text is sanctioned with the aforementioned articles, the signatories of the Charter state that there will be a cost of at least R$545 billion by 2050, which corresponds to an annual cost of around R$22 billion and a 9% increase in electrical energy.

“These amendments amplify inflationary pressures, since electrical energy is an essential input for industry, commerce and services. Furthermore, the amendments promote more benefits for a privileged minority at the expense of the majority of consumers”, they point out.

The text was forwarded for presidential sanction on December 19th. The president has 15 working days to sanction or veto a project, whether in full or in part.

The following signed the document: National Energy Consumers Front; Brazilian Association of Electricity Concessionaires; Brazilian Association of Large Energy Consumers and Free Consumers; Brazilian Association of Energy Traders; Brazilian Association of Electricity Generating Companies; National Association of Energy Consumers; and the União pela Energia group.

Also signatories are the Brazilian Association of Electricity Distributors; Brazilian Association of Investors in Energy Self-production; Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Transmission Companies; Brazilian Association of Wind Energy and New Technologies; Brazilian Association of Independent Electricity Producers.
