Fuad is sworn in as mayor of BH virtually amid cancer treatment

The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman (PSD), aged 77, was admitted this Friday (3) to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mater Dei hospital with acute respiratory failure. According to the hospital, Fuad received ventilatory assistancethat is, he breathes with the help of devices. The politician undergoes tests to assess his health.

Re-elected in 2024, Fuad took office on Wednesday (1st), remotely. His speech was read by his vice-president, Álvaro Damião (União Brasil), because Fuad was having difficulty speaking.

In a press release, the Mater Dei hospital reported: “The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman, was admitted this afternoon to the Intensive Care Unit at the Mater Dei Health Network with acute respiratory failure, with ventilatory assistance. The mayor is carrying out exams to evaluate the situation.” The statement is signed by doctors Enaldo Melo de Lima and Anselmo Dornas Moura.

Earlier, Belo Horizonte City Hall had reported that Fuad went to another hospital in the morning to carry out an assessment of rehabilitation treatment with physiotherapy sessions. “Physiotherapy is a medical recommendation and necessary for full recovery after undergoing a procedure against cancer of the lymphatic system,” said the city of BH.

Difficulties on inauguration day

Fuad’s inauguration, two days ago, took place remotely, from home, and he wore a mask. The measures were taken by medical recommendationso that he would not expose himself to the crowd in the auditorium where the inauguration took place.

The mayor of BH recovers from a cancer treatment and performs maintenance procedures, which affect immunity.

In July last year, Fuad announced that he was treating non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He remained in the position of mayor and in the race for re-election while undergoing chemotherapy. In October, he reported that he was cured.

Four hospitalizations in 40 days

This is the fourth hospitalization of the mayor of BH in 40 days.

On December 19, he spent four days hospitalized with diarrhea and intestinal bleeding. Before, on the 6th, he was stricken with pneumonia and sinusitis.

In November, the cause of the five-day hospitalization was severe leg pain, a consequence of cancer treatment.
