Mayor of BH, Fuad Noman takes leave due to pneumonia and ICU admission; vice takes over
The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman (PSD), requested a 15-day leave from office this Saturday, the 4th, to treat pneumonia that left him hospitalized since Friday, the 3rd. With the measure, the vice-mayor, Álvaro Damião (União), takes over as mayor of the capital of Minas Gerais on an interim basis.
According to the latest medical bulletin from Mater Dei hospital, released this Saturday, Noman was in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), where he will remain indefinitely. He has respiratory failure, caused by pneumonia.
Noman still needs sedation and mechanical ventilation, but the use of devices is already reducing. It is the fourth time that Noman has been hospitalized since he was re-elected to the position in October last year. He announced in July that he had a cancer known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In October, between the first and second rounds of the election, the mayor declared that he was cured of the disease. However, hospitalizations have become frequent since then.
In December he stayed in the Intensive Care Unit to treat diarrhea and intestinal bleeding. Previously, in the same month, he had already been hospitalized with sinusitis and bronchitis. He was also hospitalized in November with leg pain caused by cancer treatment.
Noman was sworn in via video call on Wednesday, the 1st, and his speech was read by the vice-mayor, Álvaro Damião (União Brasil), given the speaking difficulties faced by the mayor.
