Government changes electricity auction rules and Eneva (ENEV3) benefits

SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – The Ministry of Mines and Energy published this Monday changes to the ordinance with the rules for holding an auction that will contract more power for the Brazilian electrical system, in order to allow greater participation of existing thermoelectric plants.

According to a publication in the Official Gazette of the Union, existing thermoelectric plants will be able to compete for contracts to deliver power in 2028, 2029 and 2030, changing last week’s text that opened this possibility only to new ventures.

The change benefits Eneva (ENEV3), one of the largest thermoelectric generators in the country. Under previous rules, the company was unable to try to rehire plants in the Parnaíba complex, which caused its shares to fall almost 10% last Thursday.
