Earthquake leaves dozens dead in Tibet

The rupture occurs on the eve of Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration for a third term, scheduled for Friday. The opposition alleges that there was fraud in the counting of votes and disputes Maduro’s victory. The result is also not recognized by several countries, including Brazil, because the Venezuelan electoral court, controlled by Maduro supporters, refused to release the ballots that would confirm the numbers.

Far-right one step away from power in Austria

Austrian President Van der Bellen has asked the leader of the far-right FOP (Freedom Party), Herbert Kickl, to try to form a coalition to govern the country. The measure was taken after the failure of the conservative People’s Party (OVP) in the same task, which led to the resignation of its leader, Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

If Kickl is successful, it will be the first time his party has governed the country. The FOP was the party with the most votes in the September elections, with 29%, but, until then, no party had accepted an alliance with the party.

The FOP was founded in 1956 by a former SS officer, a paramilitary militia of the German Nazi Party. Currently, its main banners include rejection of immigrants, opposition to aid to Ukraine in the war against Russia and skepticism towards the European Union.

Biden bans oil exploration off the US coast

Joe Biden yesterday announced a ban on oil and gas exploration on almost the entire coast of the United States. The ban covers the East and West coasts, a stretch of Alaska’s Bering Sea and the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
