NGO Save the Children International closes its doors in Nicaragua
Daniel Ortega’s government announced this Wednesday (8) the closure of Save the Children International in Nicaragua, amid a series of closures of NGOs and an increase in control of foreign cooperation in the country.
Save the Children International, which operates in more than 100 countries in defense of children’s rights, requested its “voluntary dissolution” for having completed its “project portfolio in Nicaragua”, according to decrees published in the official newspaper La Gaceta.
Around 5,600 NGOs have had to close their operations in Nicaragua since the 2018 protests against the government, which left more than 300 people dead, according to the UN.
