She was the first woman to be elected as a diocesan of Washington, in 2011. The religious leader also serves as president of the Protestant Episcopal cathedral Foundation, which oversees Washington’s ministries National cathedral and the cathedral schools.

The bishop Budde is an advocate for racial equity, gun violence prevention, immigration reform and the full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people. ”She believes that Jesus calls all who follow him to fight for justice and peace, and to respect the dignity of every human being,” the Church describes.

According to American radio NPRshe is known for being critical of Trump. In 2020, she wrote an op-ed for The New York Times criticizing the then-president for using the police to evacuate the city. Lafayette Square, near the church of St.. John’samid protests over the death of George Floyd.
