Minister Paulo Teixeira rules out changes to food expiration dates

The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, said this Thursday, 23, that the government is not considering changing the food expiration date system to reduce the prices of these products, a demand from the supermarket sector. He spoke to journalists after a meeting at Palácio do Planalto about rising food prices.

This Thursday’s discussion involved, in addition to Paulo Teixeira, the ministers of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, the Civil House, Rui Costa, and the Secretary of Economic Policy of the Ministry of Finance, Guilherme Mello.

The Minister of Agrarian Development said that on Friday, the 24th, the proposals raised at this Thursday’s meeting will be presented to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. And which announcements depend on what the head of government decides.

According to Paulo Teixeira, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, should participate in the meeting on Friday. In addition to the Minister of Agrarian Development, Haddad and Lula, Carlos Fávaro and Rui Costa should also be present.

The rise in food prices has gained more attention from government officials in recent days. On Wednesday, 22, Rui Costa said that the government would discuss “interventions” to reduce prices. The statement went down badly with the market and the business community, and the minister started talking about “actions” and “measures”.

Rui Costa had already ruled out changes to the food expiration system in an interview with CNN on Wednesday night.

If adopted, the measure would likely provide ammunition for opponents to criticize the government.

In the first days of 2025, Planalto experienced great wear and tear caused by rumors spread by opponents that Pix transactions would be taxed.
