Convicted of six crimes. On November 17, 2021, the soldier was found guilty of: incitement to crime, obstruction of an officer, invasion of a restricted location, disturbance of order, damage to public property and civil disobedience. The established sentence was 41 months in prison.

He remained in jail until March 2023. Chansley was released from the Arizona Federal Jail 14 months before the end of his sentence, to serve house arrest. At the time, he admitted that he was wrong to invade the Capitol.

Men of honor admit when they are wrong. Not just publicly, but for themselves. I was wrong to enter the Capitol. I have no excuse. No excuses whatsoever. This behavior is indefensible.
Jacob Chansley, US Navy veteran, known in Brazil as the “Viking of the Capitol”

Promise to enter politics. Despite continuing to praise Donald Trump and defending far-right conspiracy theories, the soldier said he would run for the Libertarian Party for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies in the state of Arizona, where he lives.

Application did not go forward. Despite the promise, Chansley ended up not ratifying the candidacy. In polls, he never appeared with more than one percentage point.

Hat and spear recovered after court decision. In August 2024, Judge Royce Lambert decided to return the objects to the Capitol invader. “The government has given no reason to want to take Mr. Chansley’s private property,” the judge wrote.
