Jamil: Petro tries to regionalize the deportation problem with Trump
For Jamil, although the Celac meeting seems interesting for Brazil and other Latin countries on the issue of immigration, the meeting also calls into question how far countries want to risk a good relationship with the USA, an important trading partner for Latin countries.
What Petro just announced was a call for an extraordinary assembly of Latin American countries precisely to try to coordinate a joint position. But this is also very very complicated, because, after all, will everyone want to give up their preferential relationship, some type of privilege or avoid a crisis with Donald Trump in the name of Colombians?
Gustavo Petro, at this moment, is trying to internationalize or, at least, regionalize the problem, saying, look, this problem here isn’t just mine, it’s a regional problem, we’re all going to have to deal with it in a coordinated way. For now, Itamaraty has not yet commented.
Tomorrow marks one week of Donald Trump in power. Before the first week ends, we already have the first major diplomatic crisis between Donald Trump and Latin America.
