Trump cuts funds from South Africa and attacks the country’s land reform

BySimon Rousseau Posted onFebruary 3, 2025 1:33 am

On his social networks, Trump accused South Africa of being “confiscating” land and “treating some very bad classes of people.” Although it has not made any specific mention, it is believed that the American is referring to lands occupied by South African whites, as he defended the interest of this group on other occasions.

“It’s a bad situation that radical leftist media doesn’t even want to mention,” said the president.

“A massive violation of human rights is happening for everyone to see. The United States will not tolerate it, we will act. In addition, I will cut all the future financing for South Africa until a complete investigation of this situation be completed, “he wrote.

The issue of land reform is still one of the most delicate themes in South Africa. More than 30 years after the end of the apartheid regime, most of the properties remain in the hands of the white minority.

Official data indicates that 72% of the properties are in the hands of whites, which represent 7% of the country’s population.

In January, the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, signed a bill that stipulates that the government can, under certain circumstances, offer “null compensation” to the land that decides to expropriate in public interest.
