Former Minas Gerais governor Newton Cardoso (MDB) died at dawn on Sunday, 2, in Belo Horizonte, at the age of 86.

The cause of death was not disclosed, but according to his son, Federal Deputy Newton Cardoso Jr. (MDB-MG), his father had been hospitalized for a few days with clinical picture “that inspired care.”

The former governor’s son lamented his father’s death on his profiles on social networks, stating that the legacy of “tractor”, nickname that he was known in Minas Gerais, “will never be forgotten.”

According to a statement issued by Governor Romeu Zema (Novo), the state will decree official mourning of three days.

The forecast is that the funeral will take place this Monday, 3, at the Palace of Liberdade, former headquarters of the government. “Minas Gerais loses a striking personality. Newton Cardoso had a long journey in politics, which began as a young man, and has always stood out for his ability to dialogue, charisma and resilience, ”says the note published by Zema.

Cardoso was governor of Minas Gerais between 1987 and 1991, as well as occupying the position of deputy governor during the term of Itamar Franco (MDB), between 1999 and 2003.
